Packing First Night...

Snow fell yesterday and last night giving us a great opportunity to pack and make a base.
Big thanks to Andy for sacrificing his Ford F150 4x4 and drag the board around like a Zamboni.
Thanks also to Daniel (the new iceguy), Peter, Kris, and Kurt.

With Thursday's Annual General Hall meeting, and the Grey Cup weekend, we plan to flood Monday night. We can do shift work, by starting at 6:30 pm and go for hours (very slow process). I'll make sure we have fire wood and beer. (alway nice to bring some).

Rookie Mistake...

With a mild -13ºC we had a great crew last night. Kris, Ian, Jeff, Bill, Peter, Craig, and Kurt. We managed to only put on ONE coat. Yes, that's right, ONE.

It was a normal flood, we scraped and put down one coat on each surface then turned the flow of water down in order to "hydrate" ourselves around the fire. We "hydrated" for about 15 min letting the upper water flood to freeze. To all of our surprise as we got ready to turn on the water flow to give the upper another drink, we realized the water had frozen in the hose. Rookie Mistake!

We tried everything to thaw the "snow cone" plug at the end of the hose. Hot water, hose over the fire, and stepping on the hose to loosen the frozen H2O. Nothing worked. We had to pack it up. We put the hose away with a fair amount of water still in the line.

Note: Make sure there is ample water flow to ensure the hose doesn't freeze.

Total Coats:
Lower = 46 coats
Upper = 38 coats

It looks like we can flood Thursday, but then I think Mother Nature is telling us to put down the hose for the season. We will see.

 These guys showed up after we put the gear away. They had the rink to themselves and skated after our single coat.

We are Ready for the Weekend...

Big shout out and thank you to Bill, Kris, Adrian, Ian, Craig, and Kurt for laying down two thin coats before the snow. ( Well; Adrian showed up in "Adrian Style" on a wooden sled).

I know it is still early to be thinking about it, but our Annual Wrap Up party was discussed tonight. The plan is to have our usual at the Riverstone Pub as the ice fades away in the burning sun light. But to really celebrate, we are planning a Brew-Pub Crawl in April?

What a Difference a Day Makes?

Bill and I went down to shed and muscled the snow blower on my truck this morning. I went by to check out the ice this afternoon and met George. He was going for a solo skate and really appreciates the ice.

What COLD! ...

Last night was cold, but it warmed our hearts seeing another two coats go down last night!
Trouble with the snow blower not starting didn't stop us. Peter jumped to the rescue and brought his blower down to really take back the size of the lower rink, which seemed to be shrinking with tall snow banks.
Big thanks to Bill, for giving us a head-start last night. Bill cleared the upper and dug out the benching during the day.

Got R Done!

Big thanks again to Bill, who was down this afternoon shoveling the upper for the large amount of people that turned up on this sunny -14ºC day.

Great turn out tonight... with Bill, Ian, Peter, Craig, Scott, Andy and Kurt. We couldn't get the blower to start, so the team went old-school and got R done. Dedication was there tonight for sure.
Good clean and scrape and we put down two coats on each tonight.

What Blizzard?...

Big thanks to a great BIG team today!
Peter, Bill, Craig, Andrew Ginter, Ian, Scott (and Scott's friend), John and Kurt.
Three snow blowers (Peter brought his down), going making large areas of clearing fast. Followed by a surgical team behind the blowers, scraping and pushing the white stuff.

Just as we packed up, a family arrives in a mini van full of kids with skates and sticks. Really made it all worth while.

Big Clearing Tonight...

The weather has been cold for a week and we had snow accumulating for a few day. It needed a big clearing off of snow with the help of Ian, John, Kris, Peter, Craig, and Kurt. We had both snow blower going and were able to scrape off the ice.
The good news with all the cold weather it preserved the ice, and not many skaters ventured out at sub 25º C. We wanted to flood but it was snowing just enough to hold us back.
Other good news, the ice will be nice for the Valentine party Saturday
